“Lovely details, Emma…. Watch what you’re doing with that brush, Josh…… Alex – don’t even think about picking up a paintbrush till you’ve put an apron on…….. Yes Lewis, you can go to the toilet….. No Lewis, you can’t take your paintbrush with you….. Lewis, it doesn’t matter if Ben uses it while you’re gone….. Use another one – they’re all the same….. Charlotte, are you sure it should be that colour?….. Adam, that’s a lovely dinosaur, but you’re supposed to be painting your dad…… I know you like dinosaurs, but I can’t put that on our ‘My Family’ display, can I?……. Be careful with that water pot….too late.”
Well, the rules didn’t say we had to write both sides of the conversation. This post is part of the 100 Word Challenge for Grown-Ups at Julia’s Place.
I absolutely love this. It pretty much echoes what I spent last year saying! Well done you :0)
Thanks Harriet. I was hoping some other teachers would say they recognised the scenario.
You’re right — she didn’t say we couldn’t! I like it. I remember similar days when I helped at my daughter’s Head Start class.
Glad it sounded familiar!
I love this , as a fellow teacher this strikes so many chords. When you see it like this it shows the pace of life in a class. Really made me laugh ( no mean feat after 4 hours of parent meetings tonight!)
I’m so glad it’s striking a chord with other teachers…otherwise it would mean it’s just me that has days like that!
Love, love, love this! Hilarious, especially Adam painting a dinasour! I am pretty sure this must have been a one sided conversation that you have had many times.
Yes, I have indeed had many, many conversations just like this one!
Placed me immediately in the thick, Robin
Very Joyce G, loved it! Great : )
Had to google the Joyce G reference, but I see what you mean!
As GSussex says, harks back to Joyce Grenfell, who was a very clever lady. Very well observed – I was there.
LOL and I also read it in the voice of Joyce Grenfell. As yet another teacher, I can totally identify.
After spending four days doing ‘enterprise’ activities with 3, 4, 5 and 6 year olds, I can completely empathise with this great writing!
Brilliant! And yes, totally, joyously Joyce!
This is great. The one-sided conversation of a teacher/assistant that naturally involves many children. You could put this dialogue in a house of many children too!
It’s only when you look back at the things you find yourself saying that you realise what it sounds like and your eyebrows rise at the irony of it all.
I could hear Joyce Grenfell too as I read it. Brilliant & you didn’t even have to make it up!
Clever approach. Even though you only wrote one side, it is so true to life. But, my answer to the color question is that it should be any color the child could imagine. Nicely done.
Thanks to everyone for the Joyce Grenfell references. I had really never heard of her when I wrote this, but I’ve just been listening to her on Youtube and having a good giggle!
This is great, I can picture this perfectly x
