This post was written as part of Julia’s 100 word challenge. It’s set a few years after another piece I wrote called Laugh Don’t Cry.
“It’s weird being back. I haven’t been in this house since…well since Dad’s funeral.”
Luisa looked up from her magazine. “Amy! That was 10 years ago. Haven’t you visited Mom once in all that time?”
“Good Lord no! What was the point? She had nothing I needed. Did you come?”
“I always meant to, but …you know how it is. I was too busy. And I knew Charlotte was coming, so…”
The solicitor cleared his throat. “Your mother, Elsa May Stephens, left you both something in her will… £1000 for each visit you made her in the last 10 years.”
cute.. Just wanted you to know that I’ve gone by at least twenty times. And the solicitor’s name is?
lol! I think Aunt Elsa was quite canny before she got dementia and she knew exactly who her money would end up going to 🙂
shucks… can’t blame a guy for trying, huh?
Good. Unfortunately it hardly ever works out like this in real life. Charlotte should get it all of course.
No, it’s a shame it’s not real life. I’d like to imagine Aunt Elsa having a real good laugh at those no-good daughters of hers. I think Charlotte is going to be a very rich lady…
Deservedly so! Wkd comeupance. Bet they’re ugly too! Charlotte, you shall go to the ball …
Justice is served, revenge wreaked. Good one.
haha, love Aunt Elsa’s moment of triumph from the otherside! Cleverly done!
Bang on target! What a great tongue-in-cheek entry; the kick is terrific!
Poor mom.
It does make me wonder. What happened to these two to make them think like that? What wretched lives they must lead.
Great story.
Hmmm I’m like Aunt Elsa, she’s a sharp one I think. She’s funny x
Nice twist, Sally-Jayne! I did not see that coming! 😀
The voices you capture are so true. Our lives fill up so quickly. I like that Luisa and Amy are to blame…but also, not. Their stance remains sympathetic. Even if they end up not getting what they want. 😉
Nicely done!
Very clever, you must be just as canny as Elsa!
Justice. It’ll turn and bite you. This is well written – first you startled me with Amy’s callousness (“What was the point? She had nothing I needed”!) , and then made me laugh with the final twist!
Love it. So well-written – and it grabbed me right from the start.
