In the Beginning

He slotted the last piece into place and regarded his creation in awe. It had taken 7 whole days to finish, but his toil had been worth it. It was perfect – smooth and round.

The others saw and they too regarded it with reverence. Soon he had many followers. Those who came after would also worship at its altar, but that was later.

They carved out their laws on cave walls and chose one man from amongst themselves to ensure that all abided by them. Exile was the punishment for those who did not.

He called his great creation Football.

The true history finally revealed!! Love it!

  2. Tee, hee! I think you’re referencing soccer, but it almost works for American football, too. They take it so seriously.

  3. ventahl says:

Ha Ha! V satirical. And it hasn’t evolved much in the interim either ….

  4. Ross Mannell says:

Wonderful and steeped in pre-history. The entries adults are linking show we, like the children when they saw the prompt, can tell a tale about a pile of bones. πŸ™‚

  5. Brilliant, this really made me smile!

  6. Sandra says:

Beautiful analogy for the beautiful game. Good one.

  7. Hahaha, what an inspired interpretation SJ. I have tried to be all dark and mysterious, but I adore your take on this.
    Just fab πŸ™‚

  8. This is absolutely brilliant. I was rather uneasily wondering wear it was leading, but I love the startling ending.

  9. Excellent … and its still a cavemans sport!

  10. Louise says:

Love it. Some people can take football far too seriously (my husband included in that!). Great piece.

  11. DancingInTheRain says:

I love it Sally-Jayne – written so atmospherically – and then that punchline – brilliant.

  12. naaz83 says:

Put a big smile on my face! πŸ™‚

CHUCKLE…absolutely not where I thought it was going. Amazing misdirection! Thanks for the spin. πŸ™‚

  14. Gilly Gee says:

Excellent! you really made me laugh. You conjured up an image of Neanderthals in my head and then of course – football the ultimate Neanderthal game!

  15. enterprisegran says:

Inspired! Good to have something funny made from a pile of bones.

  16. Judee says:

Fun one! And the first game begins! πŸ˜€

  17. Caerlynn Nash says:

Great job! I’d never have thought “football!”

  18. seanfallon01 says:

Oh that is genius – On the seventh day he made football

  19. Delft says:

Must have been painful to kick around.

  20. Mayumi-H says:

Too funny, Sally Jayne! I really like how painstakingly you lay out the rules and create such pomp around them. Then, the twist! πŸ˜€

  21. gsussex says:

So many possibilities came to mind and then the twist, loved it! G

  22. snagglewordz says:

Hahahaha, absolutely brilliant! Take off that last line and you have a completely different story – now that’s clever!
